Day 2 · Day 2
Pyramids Sphinx, Saqqara
After breakfast During your stay in Cairo, you will embark on an extraordinary journey to the iconic Giza Plateau, home to the world-renowned Pyramids of Giza. The Great Pyramid of Khufu, the largest of the three pyramids, stands as a testament to ancient Egyptian engineering and has been the tallest man-made structure for over 3,800 years. Adjacent to it are the slightly smaller but equally impressive Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaure, each with its unique history and significance. Nearby, you'll encounter the enigmatic Great Sphinx of Giza, a colossal limestone statue with the body of a lion and the head of a pharaoh, believed to represent Khafre. The Sphinx, one of the oldest and largest monolithic statues in the world, adds to the mystique of the area. A visit to the Solar Boat Museum, housing the meticulously reconstructed boat of Khufu, further enriches the experience, showcasing the pharaoh's journey through the afterlife.
In contrast, Saqqara, another significant archaeological site, offers a glimpse into the early development of pyramid construction. The highlight here is the Step Pyramid of Djoser, designed by the architect Imhotep during the Third Dynasty. This pyramid is notable for being the first colossal stone building in Egypt and represents a critical evolution in royal tomb architecture.
Additionally, Saqqara is home to the Tomb of Kagemni, a beautifully decorated burial site of a high-ranking official, and the Serapeum, an underground gallery of tombs dedicated to the sacred Apis bulls worshipped in ancient Egyptian religion.
